Learning Reiki
Positions
One of the most important things one needs to learn when starting to get into Reiki in order to treat others are the Reiki positions of the hands. There are several pre-established hand positions that one needs to learn in order to be able to treat other people via this healing method. But before that, however, some guidelines are important.
Firstly, take note that before one starts with treatment, it may be good to perform some exercises to get one’s own energy going. Rubbing one’s hands together to warm oneself up is very important and can be a definite help. Secondly, when performing all of these hand positions, one should make sure that one’s hands are kept cupped slightly and one’s fingers are held tightly together, with the thumbs pulled against the sides of the hand. This is important in order to keep one’s healing energy in one’s hands - if one’s fingers are open, the energy will simply dissipate before it can be sent to the intended recipient.
Thirdly, you should always start at your patient’s head and make your way down to his or her feet, working through the prescribed hand positions as you do so. And fourthly, as one goes through the treatment routine, one must always keep at least one hand in contact with one’s patient. This is important so as to ensure that one does not break the flow of energy that is established once one has begun treating a patient.
Lastly, although Reiki can of course be used as a spot treatment to treat such problems as headaches, sore muscles and the like, always keep in mind that it is intended to treat the entire body in order to restore the body’s overall energy balance. This means that although you are definitely doing well by removing the pain, you may not be healing him or her of what ails him or her - the root cause of the pain. So it may be good for you to make sure that you treat your patient fully at a later time - either with this hands-on method or by utilizing the distant-treatment method.
Now we can go to the various Reiki positions for your hands, which are all to be accomplished with the patient relaxed and lying on his or her back or in a chair. The first position involves covering the eyes with the palms, thumbs atop the forehead and meeting at the inner ends of the eyebrows. The second requires covering the ears with the cupped palms. The third involves placing the palms at the sides of the head with the fingertips almost touching the ears.
In the fourth position, from behind the patient, place your palms on the top of the neck with the tips of your index fingers and thumbs meeting. In the fifth, move to the right side of the patient; place your right hand in the center of the chest with the fingers pointing left, and place your left hand perpendicular to your right hand with its index finger touching your right thumb.
In the sixth position place your left hand under the left breast, fingers facing right and your right hand under the right breast, fingers also facing right. For the seventh slide the hands down to the waist; for the eighth slide them down to cover the genitals.
For the ninth position, shift to the patient’s left and cover the genitals with both hands. For the tenth, cover the side of the knee and the ankle. And lastly, for the eleventh and last of these Reiki positions, position yourself above the patient and cover the soles of the feet, fingers facing down.
